Recycling - we need help!

We are trying to figure out a decent system of collecting recycling at home. We don't have home pick up (darn it!), and we are already recycling our cans with a good system (The Crusher makes it easy! And it is therapeutic!!)

The problem at our house comes with ALL the other stuff. I rinse the cans, but they end up sitting on my counter until someone throws them out. We have ants, too, which makes it a little easier to just toss them. The paper and cardboard eventually get tossed, too, because they just pile up in the corner of the kitchen.

HELP ME! Do you have a good system? Care to share how you started and keep it going? Thanks!

  1. We recycle plastic, cardboard and cans. We don't have much paper other than mail which generally we shred. I started up using small clothes hampers in the pantry - you know those small round ones? Each one had a different recyclable. When they were full, we went to the recycle center. Since they were already separated, it was easy disposal but because they were small, I did and still do make several trips to the center. However, it's on the way to Walmart and since I go there practically every other day it's not out of the way. LOL Good luck! Ally has really learned a lot about recycling and why we do it.

  2. Which center do you take it to? I Googled it and a bunch of different places came up, which I thought was odd. I am determined to get my house going on this!

  3. We take ours to Ripley, which of course is way out of your way. I think most of my friends in Charleston go to the Slack Street location since they take most everything.

here's an excerpt from a google search:

Kanawha County (304-342-4477) operates a recycling facility at 600 Slack Street, along the Elk River in Charleston. Seven days a week, twenty-four hours a day, you can satisfy your urge to recycle by dropping off the following items at the Slack Street location:

    * Paper – newspaper, magazines, catalogs, cardboard, junk mail, office paper, school paper, file folders, envelopes. Not accepted: waxy cardboard
    * Containers – plastic bottles and jugs (#1 through #7), glass bottles and jars, aluminum cans and foil, steel cans. Not accepted: Styrofoam, plastic bags
    * Scrap metal – old appliances, scrap metal. Not accepted: appliances containing Freon, propane and gas tanks, fencing, bed springs, any type of wire
